uses for patterns

What can you do with a pattern?

Why, anything you wish.

Asukako, Dancer of the Phoenix Fans, original artwork by Ming-Ling, using several patterns for the clothingThe original idea was to use these scans in artwork, because they provided an instant fabric pattern that was rich and Japanese in flavor. This is based off of the colorful covers for the Japanese manga series, Rasen no Kakera, where the artist (Tachibana Kaim) used colorful patterns to decorate the fabrics of the characters and background. In the image to the right, I first colored the image as I normally would have. Then I placed a pattern on top and erased around each portion (sleeve, etc) to cut it out. In order to maintain the colors, I set the blending mode to soft light. Another option would to put the outline (set to multiply) over the pattern and erase the pattern to fit the portion. Of course, however you get it to work is up to you.

Other uses can be in designing wallpapers. They can make wonderful backgrounds, as you can see in this original patterns wallpaper.

The tiled images are especially useful for websites, again as backgrounds. However, you may wish to mute the colors a little to prevent your visitors' eyes from bleeding, not unlike the pattern used on the top bar of this site.

I have also used these patterns in several other layouts of mine: Personal Site Design and one of my older blog layouts.

And those are just a few suggestions. The sky's the limit!
